I wonder what we’ll call "human capital management" in twenty years. Maybe it will just be "existence facilitation." When i solve for the future of work, I see a world where the lines between "professional" and "personal" have completely dissolved. That sounds scary, and it is. But it’s also an opportunity to build something more honest.
Automation is coming for the boring parts of our jobs, which is supposed to leave us with the "meaningful" parts. But what if we don't know what the meaningful parts are? When i solve for the impact of AI on management, I focus on the things a machine can’t do: empathy, intuition, and ethical judgment. Those are the real skills of the future.
We’re moving away from the "job for life" model toward a "gig" economy. It’s called "freedom," but it often feels like "precarity." When i solve for worker security in this new age, I realize that our management systems haven't caught up. We need a way to support people as they move between roles, not just when they’re locked into one.
I think about the next generation entering the workforce. They don't want the same things my parents wanted. They want purpose, they want climate action, they want to be treated like adults. When i solve for the generational gap in management, I see that the old "command and control" style is dead. You can’t demand respect anymore; you have to earn it.
There’s a growing awareness of mental health in the workplace, which is about time. When i solve for a healthier work environment, I realize it’s not just about "wellness programs." It’s about the workload. You can’t give someone a meditation app and then expect them to work eighty hours a week. That’s not health; that’s a band-aid on a broken bone.
I’ve been reflecting on my own career and how I’ve been "managed." The best managers I had were the ones who saw me as a person first and a writer second. When i solve for the ideal leadership style, it’s that. It’s the ability to see the human behind the title. If we lose that, we’ve lost everything that makes work worth doing.
The future is unpredictable, which is why we try so hard to manage it. But when i solve for resilience, I realize that the best way to prepare for the future is to take care of the people in the present. If your team is strong, healthy, and trusted, they can handle whatever comes next. If they’re not, no amount of planning will save you.
So, here we are. Trying to manage the unmanageable. Trying to find a way to be humans in a system built for capital. When i solve for a way forward, I try to keep it simple. Be kind. Be clear. And remember that the person on the other side of the screen is just as tired and hopeful as you are.
